SCR Retrofit–Boswell Unit 3-Minnesota Power, Cohasset, MN, USA
IDS - Engineering Subcontractor to Hitachi Power Systems America, Ltd., for the retrofit of the Boswell Energy Center Unit 3 with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. Unit 3 is a Tangentially-Fired Pulverized Coal Boiler which fires sub bituminous coal from the Powder River Basin. The unit is rated at 355 MW and began commercial operation in 1973.
IDS provided Hitachi with initial Proposal Support, 3-D Plant Layout & Design, Structural & Stress Engineering, Design/Drafting, and Construction Coordination Services for all systems related to IDS’s scope of work for the SCR Retrofit Project.
IDS’s Scope of work included the following systems and components
SCR Reactor Housing
SCR Flue Gas Ducting System
SCR Support Structure Design & Engineering
Catalyst Loading Monorail System
Ammonia Piping System
Sonic Horn System
Access Platforms
IDS’s responsibilities included developing the SCR System 3-D Models, General Arrangement drawings, Assembly & Installation Drawings with applicable Fabrication Detail Drawings.
IDS (PE of Record) performed all the required Structural Engineering, Piping Stress Analysis and Code Calculations for all the systems in accordance with the applicable State and Local Building Code requirements, ASME Boiler Codes and Standards including, determining all SCR Foundation Loads, Structural Analysis, Thermal Expansion movements, structural steel & platform loads, and developing all required pipe & duct support design details.
IDS provided Construction Coordination and Support services during the construction phase of the project. IDS personnel assisted Hitachi with plant walkdowns and inspections of mechanical systems and equipment interface, provided field design and engineering recommendations, equipment interference checking, construction deviation (RFI) report coordination and support.
